For those with BPD, that may mean intense emotions, destructive actions, rapid mood swings, and feelings of abandonment. You may have gone years feeling this way and do not know any other way of living. If you are considering going to therapy, it can be overwhelming, scary, and frustrating. Psychotherapy sessions ask you to completely change how you think and rationalize behaviors. It can be a stressful and emotional experience, but a strong therapeutic alliance can help you through it. What Is a Therapeutic Alliance? The foundation for any course of therapy is the therapeutic alliance, the strong bond designed to help you through your recovery. It is the relationship you have with your therapist and the level of trust you have in her. This is what keeps you moving during therapy, even when its difficult or painful, because you know she has your best interests in mind. This connection may be hard to build but involves the following components: Genuine interest: A good therapist gives you her undivided attention. She listens to what you have to say and asks clarifying questions. She does not seem preoccupied, does not sift through email,s and she doesnt only give you her thoughts or opinions.Specialization: Your therapist needs to have an understanding of what youre going through in order to help you. This means she should have a background in studying BPD and working with patients who have BPD.Comfort: You need to be comfortable telling your therapist anything, even if its embarrassing. She should put you at ease and ensure you know your conversations are confidential.Common Goals: You both should have the same goals so that you are working towards the same endpoint. Building a Therapeutic Alliance A strong therapeutic alliance does not happen overnight and may not be possible with just any therapist. Many people with BPD will visit several healthcare providers or psychiatrists before they find one they can click with. When you are beginning therapy, its perfectly okay to have consultations with several mental health professionals. Ask questions about their approaches to therapy, what techniques and theories they often use, and their background in treating BPD and other personality disorders. Its also a good idea to inquire how available they are. The Importance of Access to Therapy Many people with BPD who engage in self-harm or have suicidal thoughts will often need to be able to call their therapist at odd hours during an emergency. Your potential therapist should be happy to answer your questions. If he seems annoyed, impatient, defensive, or keeps checking his watch, its time to move on and find someone else. A good therapist is worth the extra homework in order to help you on the path to long-term recovery. A Word From Verywell If youre having trouble finding a therapist with a background with BPD, talk to your general practitioner or primary care physician to see if he has any recommendations. He will likely have many different therapists, counselors, psychiatrists, and psychologists on the file he can refer you to.

string(40) " home on a large, barren piece of land\." I GAVE MS. TERWILLIGER a full report on our trip to the inn the next morning. We met at Spencerââ¬â¢s, and in a rare show of early rising, Adrian joined us. We will write a custom essay sample on The Indigo Spell Chapter Sixteen or any similar topic only for you Order Now ââ¬Å"Iââ¬â¢ve got a study group meeting soon,â⬠he explained. His mood was a lot better, with no mention of yesterdayââ¬â¢s . . . indiscretion. Even though there wasnââ¬â¢t much to tell, lines of worry creased her face as she heard our story. The true panic came when I mentioned my dream. Ms. Terwilligerââ¬â¢s eyes went wide, and she gripped her coffee cup so tightly, I thought it would break. ââ¬Å"She found out,â⬠she murmured. ââ¬Å"Whether it was that Alicia girl or some other way, Veronica found out about you. I should never have sent you. I thought youââ¬â¢d slip underneath her radar if the other girls were charmed, but I was wrong. I was selfish and naive. It wouldââ¬â¢ve been better if she knew I was on to her from the very beginning. Youââ¬â¢re sure you were masking Sydneyââ¬â¢s appearance?â⬠That was to Adrian. ââ¬Å"Positive,â⬠he said. ââ¬Å"Everyone we talked to, all the girls and even Alicia . . . none of them would have a clear idea of what Sydney looks like.â⬠ââ¬Å"Maybe sheââ¬â¢s been spying on you,â⬠I suggested. ââ¬Å"And saw us together. I havenââ¬â¢t been in disguise around here.â⬠ââ¬Å"Maybe,â⬠Ms. Terwilliger conceded. ââ¬Å"But we also know she was active in Los Angeles. She would have to spend considerable time stalking her victims, which wouldnââ¬â¢t give her the chance to come here and watch me extensively. Even with her powers, she canââ¬â¢t teleport.â⬠Her expression hardened with resolve. ââ¬Å"Well, thereââ¬â¢s nothing to be done now but damage control. She doesnââ¬â¢t seem to know exactly where you are yet or that youââ¬â¢re even connected to me. Iââ¬â¢ll make you another charm to try to boost this one, but it may not work if sheââ¬â¢s found a way to reach out to you. And in the meantime, donââ¬â¢t worry about offense anymore. You need to focus on defense ââ¬â particularly invisibility spells. Your best protection against Veronica at this point is for her simply not to find you if she comes looking around Palm Springs.â⬠Iââ¬â¢d continued reading the advanced offense spells, despite her warnings. With this new development, though, I knew she was right about defense being more important. Still, I couldnââ¬â¢t shake the worry that Veronica had discovered me by watching Ms. Terwilliger, which in turn made me fear for my teacherââ¬â¢s safety. ââ¬Å"You keep saying sheââ¬â¢s not after you . . . but are you really sure?â⬠ââ¬Å"Sheââ¬â¢ll avoid me if she can,â⬠said Ms. Terwilliger, sounding confident. ââ¬Å"I have the power but not the youth and beauty sheââ¬â¢s after. And even she would draw the line at taking on her sister. Itââ¬â¢s the only remnant of human decency she has left.â⬠ââ¬Å"Will she still have that attitude when you confront her?â⬠asked Adrian. Ms. Terwilliger shook her head. ââ¬Å"No. Then anything goes. Iââ¬â¢d like to meet with you tonight to practice a couple other defensive tactics.â⬠I eyed her carefully. ââ¬Å"Are you up for that? No offense, maââ¬â¢am, but you already look exhausted.â⬠ââ¬Å"Iââ¬â¢ll be fine. Meet me at the park again around ten. Iââ¬â¢ll get Weathers to let you go. We must keep you safe.â⬠She stared off into space for several moments and then focused on me again. ââ¬Å"In light of this development . . . it wouldnââ¬â¢t be a bad idea for you to find some, ah, more basic means of defense as well.â⬠ââ¬Å"Basic?â⬠I asked, puzzled. ââ¬Å"She means like a gun or a knife,â⬠supplied Adrian, catching on to what I hadnââ¬â¢t. Ms. Terwilliger nodded. ââ¬Å"If you ever confront Veronica, itââ¬â¢ll most likely come down to magic fighting magic . . . but, well, one can never say. Having something else for backup might prove invaluable.â⬠I wasnââ¬â¢t a fan of this idea. ââ¬Å"I have no clue how to knife fight. And I donââ¬â¢t like guns.â⬠ââ¬Å"Do you like being put into a coma and aging before your time?â⬠asked Adrian. I shot him a glare, surprised heââ¬â¢d be on board with this. ââ¬Å"Of course not. But where would we even get one on such short notice?â⬠From the look on his face, he knew I had a point. Suddenly, he became enthusiastic again. ââ¬Å"I think I know.â⬠ââ¬Å"Iââ¬â¢m sure you two will figure it out,â⬠said Ms. Terwilliger, her mind already moving to something else. She glanced at her watch. ââ¬Å"Almost time for classes.â⬠We all stood up, preparing to go our own ways, but I held Adrian back. I couldnââ¬â¢t imagine how in the world he would know where to get a gun on no notice. He wouldnââ¬â¢t elaborate and simply said heââ¬â¢d meet me after school. Before he left, I remembered something Iââ¬â¢d wanted to ask. ââ¬Å"Adrian, did you keep my cross?â⬠ââ¬Å"Your ââ¬â oh.â⬠Looking into his eyes, I could practically see yesterdayââ¬â¢s events playing through his mind ââ¬â including us rolling around on the bed. ââ¬Å"I dropped it when ââ¬â ah, well, before we left. Yo u didnââ¬â¢t pick it up?â⬠I shook my head, and his face fell. ââ¬Å"Shit, Iââ¬â¢m sorry, Sage.â⬠ââ¬Å"Itââ¬â¢s okay,â⬠I said automatically. ââ¬Å"Itââ¬â¢s not okay, and itââ¬â¢s my fault. I know how much it means to you.â⬠It did mean a lot to me, but I almost blamed myself as much as him. I shouldââ¬â¢ve thought of it before we left, but Iââ¬â¢d been a little preoccupied. ââ¬Å"Itââ¬â¢s just a necklace,â⬠I told him. This didnââ¬â¢t comfort him. He looked so dejected when we parted ways that I hoped he wouldnââ¬â¢t forget about us meeting up later to visit his mysterious gun source. There was nothing to worry about, though. When classes ended, he was outside my dorm in the Mustang and looked much more upbeat, with no more mention of the necklace. When he told me his gun plan, I was shocked, but after a few moments of thought, I realized he might be on to something. And so, a little less than an hour later, we found ourselves far outside the city, driving up to a forlorn-looking home on a large, barren piece of land. You read "The Indigo Spell Chapter Sixteen" in category "Essay examples" We had reached the Wolfe School of Defense. ââ¬Å"I never thought weââ¬â¢d be here again,â⬠I remarked. Wolfeââ¬â¢s house had no windows, and there were no cars in sight as we walked up to the door. ââ¬Å"He may not even be home,â⬠I murmured to Adrian. ââ¬Å"We probably should have called first.â⬠ââ¬Å"Wolfe never struck me as a guy who leaves the house very much,â⬠said Adrian. He knocked on the door, and almost instantly, we heard a flurry of barking and scampering feet. I grimaced. Wolfe, for reasons I would never be able to understand, kept a herd of Chihuahuas in his house. Heââ¬â¢d once told us that they could kill a man upon a single command. We waited a few minutes, but the barking was the only sign that there was any sort of life inside. Adrian knocked one more time (driving the dogs into an even greater frenzy) and then shrugged. ââ¬Å"I guess you were ââ¬â ââ¬Å" The door suddenly opened ââ¬â just a slit ââ¬â and one gray eye peered out at us from underneath a chain. ââ¬Å"Oh,â⬠came a grizzled voice. ââ¬Å"Itââ¬â¢s you two.â⬠The door closed, and I heard the chain being unlocked. A moment later, Wolfe slipped outside, careful not to let any of the dogs out. He had a patch over his left eye, which was probably just as well since his other eye alone seemed to peer straight through me. ââ¬Å"You shouldââ¬â¢ve called,â⬠he said. ââ¬Å"I nearly turned the dogs on you.â⬠Wolfe was dressed in his favorite pair of Bermuda shorts as well as a T-shirt showing a bald eagle riding on a monster truck. The eagle held an American flag in one set of talons and a samurai sword in the other. That seemed a weird weapon choice for such a patriotic shirt, but weââ¬â¢d long since learned not to question his wardrobe. That had come after heââ¬â¢d kicked a woman out of our class whoââ¬â¢d dared to ask if he only had one pair of shorts or several identical ones. ââ¬Å"What do you kids need?â⬠he asked. ââ¬Å"Next classes donââ¬â¢t start until after New Yearââ¬â¢s.â⬠Adrian and I exchanged glances. ââ¬Å"We, um, need a gun,â⬠I said. ââ¬Å"I mean, just to borrow.â⬠Wolfe scratched his beard. ââ¬Å"I donââ¬â¢t lend them out to students who havenââ¬â¢t taken my gun class. Safety first.â⬠I found it promising, however, that he lent out guns at all. It was a sign of his character that he didnââ¬â¢t even bother asking why we wanted one. ââ¬Å"Iââ¬â¢ve already had training,â⬠I said. That was true. It was mandatory for all Alchemists. Iââ¬â¢d done well in it, but as Iââ¬â¢d mentioned to Adrian, I really didnââ¬â¢t like guns at all. At least a knife had other uses. But a gun? It was only there to injure or kill. Wolfe arched an eyebrow, the one over his good eye. Clearly, he didnââ¬â¢t believe me. ââ¬Å"Can you back that up?â⬠ââ¬Å"Do you have a shooting range?â⬠I returned coolly. He almost looked offended. ââ¬Å"Of course I do.â⬠He led us to a building beyond the garage weââ¬â¢d trained in. Iââ¬â¢d never been inside this building before, but like his house, it had no windows. The door was covered in enough locks to meet with Alchemist security standards. He let us inside, and I gaped when I saw not only a practice range but also a wall covered in various types of guns. Wolfe gave the small holding space a once-over. ââ¬Å"Earmuffs must be in the house. Be right back.â⬠I continued staring at the wall, knowing my eyes were wide. ââ¬Å"Thereââ¬â¢s no way those are all legal.â⬠Adrianââ¬â¢s response was unexpected. ââ¬Å"Did you notice his eye patch?â⬠I dragged my gaze from the arsenal. ââ¬Å"Um, yes. From the day we first met him.â⬠ââ¬Å"No, no. I mean, I swear it was on his other eye last time.â⬠ââ¬Å"It was not,â⬠I said immediately. ââ¬Å"Are you sure?â⬠asked Adrian. I wasnââ¬â¢t, I realized. Words and numbers were easy for me to memorize. But other details, like clothing or hair ââ¬â or eye patches ââ¬â were sometimes easy for me to miss. ââ¬Å"That doesnââ¬â¢t make any sense,â⬠I finally said. ââ¬Å"Why would he do that?â⬠ââ¬Å"Heââ¬â¢s Malachi Wolfe,â⬠said Adrian. ââ¬Å"Why wouldnââ¬â¢t he do that?â⬠I couldnââ¬â¢t argue against that. Wolfe returned with ear protection. After examining his wall, he selected a small handgun and then unlocked a cabinet containing ammunition. At least he didnââ¬â¢t leave a bunch of loaded guns around. ââ¬Å"Iââ¬â¢ll do that,â⬠I told him. I took the gun from him and effortlessly loaded it. He made a small grunt of approval. He gestured toward the far end of the range, to a large paper cutout showing a human silhouette with various targets marked on it. ââ¬Å"Now then,â⬠he said. ââ¬Å"Donââ¬â¢t worry about hitting the ââ¬â ââ¬Å" I fired, perfectly emptying the clip into the most difficult targets. I handed the gun to him. He handed it back. Behind him, I could see Adrian staring at me with enormous eyes. ââ¬Å"Keep it,â⬠said Wolfe. ââ¬Å"You passed. Youââ¬â¢ve gotta buy your own ammunition, but as long as you fill out the rental agreement, youââ¬â¢re good to go.â⬠As it turned out, the ââ¬Å"rental agreementâ⬠was a piece of paper where he wrote the gun type on one side and I put my initials on the other. ââ¬Å"Really?â⬠I asked. ââ¬Å"Thatââ¬â¢s all I need to do? I mean, Iââ¬â¢m glad, but . . .â⬠I didnââ¬â¢t really know what else to say. Wolfe waved off my protests. ââ¬Å"Youââ¬â¢re a good kid. If you say you need a gun, I believe you. Someone giving you trouble?â⬠I slipped the gun into my messenger bag. ââ¬Å"Something like that.â⬠Wolfe glanced over at Adrian. ââ¬Å"What about you? You need a gun too?â⬠ââ¬Å"Iââ¬â¢m good,â⬠said Adrian. ââ¬Å"Besides, I havenââ¬â¢t had the training. Safety first.â⬠Wolfe opened up the ammunition cabinet again and produced a long wooden tube and a sandwich bag of what looked like small darts. ââ¬Å"You want to borrow my blowgun? Not much of a learning curve on this. I mean, youââ¬â¢ll never be able to match the skill and cunning of the Amazonian warriors that I stole this from, but it can get you out of a pinch.â⬠ââ¬Å"Thanks, but Iââ¬â¢ll take my chances,â⬠Adrian said after several long moments. He almost sounded as though heââ¬â¢d considered it. I was still hung up on Wolfeââ¬â¢s other words, not sure I believed what Iââ¬â¢d heard. ââ¬Å"You were in the Amazon?â⬠This time, Wolfe arched the eyebrow above his eye patch. ââ¬Å"You donââ¬â¢t believe me?â⬠ââ¬Å"No, no, of course I do,â⬠I said quickly. ââ¬Å"Itââ¬â¢s just, youââ¬â¢ve never mentioned it before.â⬠Wolfe gazed off beyond us. ââ¬Å"Iââ¬â¢ve been trying for years to forget my time there. But some things, you just canââ¬â¢t escape.â⬠A very long and very uncomfortable silence followed. At last, I cleared my throat. ââ¬Å"Well, thank you, sir. We should get going. Hopefully I wonââ¬â¢t need the gun for very long.â⬠ââ¬Å"Keep it as long as you need,â⬠he said. ââ¬Å"If I want it back, Iââ¬â¢ll find you.â⬠And on that disturbing note, Adrian and I left. Although I understood Ms. Terwilligerââ¬â¢s reasons for ââ¬Å"old-fashionedâ⬠defense, I was in no way comfortable having a gun around. Iââ¬â¢d have to keep it in my car in case school authorities ever did a search of my room and discovered it. My Alchemist and magical kits were already a liability. I was pretty sure thereââ¬â¢d be no talking my way out of a gun. Adrian returned me to Amberwood. I started to open the door and then paused to glance over at him. ââ¬Å"Thanks,â⬠I said. ââ¬Å"For everything. Going to the inn. Suggesting we see Wolfe.â⬠ââ¬Å"Hey, that was worth it just to know Wolfe owns a blowgun.â⬠I laughed. ââ¬Å"Actually, Iââ¬â¢d be more surprised if he didnââ¬â¢t. See you later.â⬠Adrian nodded. ââ¬Å"Sooner than you think.â⬠ââ¬Å"Whatââ¬â¢s that mean?â⬠I asked, suspicion rearing up in me. He dodged the question and reached underneath his seat. ââ¬Å"I called Alicia,â⬠he told me, producing a small box. ââ¬Å"She couldnââ¬â¢t find your cross. Her housekeeping service had already gone through and cleaned the room, but she says sheââ¬â¢ll check to see if it got caught up in the bedding. Oh, and I also asked about Veronica. She hasnââ¬â¢t been back.â⬠That was disheartening news, but I was touched heââ¬â¢d called. ââ¬Å"Thanks for trying.â⬠He opened the box and pulled out a necklace with a tiny wooden cross on it. ââ¬Å"I got you a replacement. I mean, I know thereââ¬â¢s no real substitute, but I wanted to get you something. And donââ¬â¢t start about not being able to accept some fancy gift,â⬠he said, guessing the protest I was about to make. ââ¬Å"It cost me five dollars from a street vendor, and Iââ¬â¢m pretty sure the chain is brass.â⬠I bit off my words and took the necklace from him. The cross barely weighed anything. Studying it more closely, I could see a tiny pattern of silver flowers painted on its surface. ââ¬Å"The vendor didnââ¬â¢t do that. Thatââ¬â¢s your handiwork.â⬠ââ¬Å"Well . . . I know youââ¬â¢re into simple stuff, but Iââ¬â¢ve always got to have some embellishment.â⬠I ran my finger over the crossââ¬â¢s surface. ââ¬Å"Whyââ¬â¢d you choose morning glories?â⬠ââ¬Å"Because Iââ¬â¢m not the biggest fan of lilies.â⬠I smiled at that. When I returned to my dorm room, I laid the necklace out on my dresser. I gave it one last fond look and then tried to decide how best to spend the rest of my day. Our trip to Wolfe actually hadnââ¬â¢t taken that long, so I had plenty of time to catch dinner and make sure I was up to date on my homework. I actually ate with Kristin and Julia for a change, which was kind of a nice break from the drama of my other friends. Of course, most of the meal consisted of Julia gushing about ââ¬Å"Dave.â⬠By the end, both she and Kristin were demanding to know when Iââ¬â¢d bring him by again. As the evening pushed on, I began to prepare for my meeting with Ms. Terwilliger. I wasnââ¬â¢t sure what kind of magic weââ¬â¢d be practicing outdoors but figured I should be ready for anything. I packed a wide variety of items from my kit and even had the foresight to bring a granola bar for post-magic fuel. Once everything was in order, I headed back downstairs. I was nearly out the dorm door when Mrs. Weathers called out to me. ââ¬Å"Sydney?â⬠I paused to glance back. ââ¬Å"Yes, maââ¬â¢am?â⬠ââ¬Å"Where are you going? Itââ¬â¢s nearly curfew.â⬠Frowning, I walked over to her desk. ââ¬Å"Iââ¬â¢m doing an assignment for Ms. Terwilliger.â⬠Mrs. Weathers looked troubled. ââ¬Å"Yes, I know you do that a lot for her . . . but I havenââ¬â¢t received authorization from her to let you out after hours today.â⬠Her expression turned apologetic. ââ¬Å"Iââ¬â¢m sure this is all on the up-and-up, but, well, rules are rules.â⬠ââ¬Å"Of course,â⬠I said. ââ¬Å"But she said sheââ¬â¢d let you know. Are you sure you didnââ¬â¢t get anything? A note? A phone call?â⬠She shook her head. ââ¬Å"Nothing. Iââ¬â¢m sorry.â⬠ââ¬Å"I understand,â⬠I murmured, though I wasnââ¬â¢t sure I did. Despite her perpetually scattered nature, Ms. Terwilliger was usually good about this sort of thing. Mrs. Weathers assured me sheââ¬â¢d let me go if Ms. Terwilliger gave the okay by phone, so I returned to my room and attempted to call her. I went straight to voice mail, and my text went unanswered. Had something happened to her? Had that magical confrontation Iââ¬â¢d been dreading finally gone down? I kicked around my dorm room for the next hour or so, letting all my worries eat at me. Veronica. Marcus. St. Louis. Ms. Terwilliger. The dream. Over and over, I kept imagining the worst outcome for all of them. Just when I thought Iââ¬â¢d go crazy, Ms. Terwilliger finally returned my call. ââ¬Å"Why didnââ¬â¢t you show up?â⬠she asked as soon as I answered. I felt relieved. Sheââ¬â¢d gone to the park. That explained the lack of contact since there was no signal out there. ââ¬Å"I tried! Mrs. Weathers wouldnââ¬â¢t let me out. You forgot to give me permission.â⬠ââ¬Å"I most certainly didnââ¬â¢t. . . .â⬠Her words trailed off uncertainly. ââ¬Å"That is, I thought I did. . . .â⬠ââ¬Å"Itââ¬â¢s okayâ⬠I said. ââ¬Å"Youââ¬â¢ve had a lot on your mind.â⬠ââ¬Å"Itââ¬â¢s not okay.â⬠She sounded angry but it was at herself, not me. ââ¬Å"I need to be on top of this.â⬠ââ¬Å"Well, you can call Mrs. Weathers now,â⬠I said. ââ¬Å"Too late. Iââ¬â¢m already back home. Weââ¬â¢ll have to attempt this again another time.â⬠ââ¬Å"Iââ¬â¢m sorry,â⬠I said. ââ¬Å"I tried.â⬠Ms. Terwilliger sighed. ââ¬Å"I know you did. Itââ¬â¢s not your fault. Itââ¬â¢s mine. Iââ¬â¢m letting all of this wear me down, and now Iââ¬â¢m getting sloppy. Iââ¬â¢ve already taken too many risks at your expense, and itââ¬â¢s put Veronica on your trail. I canââ¬â¢t let her get any farther.â⬠A chill ran through me as I thought of those comatose girls ââ¬â and the possibility of me joining them. Iââ¬â¢d been able to stay cool and collected while investigating, but last nightââ¬â¢s dream had driven home the dangers I faced. That image of the girl in the newspaper hovered in my mind as I held the phone and paced my room. I stopped in front of a mirror and tried to picture myself like that, aged before my time. I squeezed my eyes shut and turned away. I couldnââ¬â¢t let that happen to me. I just couldnââ¬â¢t, and I needed Ms. Terwilliger if I was going to stay safe. Maybe I was a prodigy, but I was nowhere near being able to take on someone like her sister. ââ¬Å"Get some rest, maââ¬â¢am,â⬠I said at last. ââ¬Å"You sound like you need it.â⬠ââ¬Å"Iââ¬â¢ll try. And you be careful, Miss Melbourne.â⬠ââ¬Å"I will.â⬠Being careful was the only thing I could do on my own for now. I just hoped it would be enough. When we got off the phone, I didnââ¬â¢t want to sleep again. I was afraid to, and it wasnââ¬â¢t just because of the sheer terror Iââ¬â¢d felt in last nightââ¬â¢s dream. Ms. Terwilliger had explained there was a type of searching spell that sought people in their sleep, and I worried that if Veronica reached out to me again, she might get a fix on my location. The problem was that after last nightââ¬â¢s sketchy sleep, I was now even more exhausted. My usual coffee and distraction tricks failed, and before I knew it, I was asleep. I donââ¬â¢t know how much time passed before I dreamed. One moment I was lost in the oblivion of sleep. The next, I found myself standing in the room that had hosted Sonya and Mikhailââ¬â¢s reception. It looked exactly the same: flowers everywhere, tables covered in white linen and crystal glasses . . . The only difference was that the room was empty and silent. It was eerie, seeing all that richness and glamour with no one to enjoy it. I couldââ¬â¢ve been in a ghost town. I looked down and saw that I wore the same dress from that evening as well. ââ¬Å"I couldââ¬â¢ve made it red, you know. Thatââ¬â¢s a better color for you ââ¬â not that blue looks bad on you.â⬠Adrian strode toward me, dressed in the same dark blue suit. Understanding hit me. I was in a spirit dream. It was another of that elementââ¬â¢s incredible feats, the ability for a spirit user to intrude on someoneââ¬â¢s dreams. No ââ¬â not intrude. The user was actually able to create the dream itself, controlling every detail. ââ¬Å"Itââ¬â¢s been a long time since you pulled me into one of these,â⬠I said. ââ¬Å"And look at the progress youââ¬â¢ve made. Last time you were kicking and screaming.â⬠He held out a hand. ââ¬Å"Want to dance?â⬠ââ¬Å"No music,â⬠I said, not that I had any intention of dancing. He had a point about my reaction, though. I hadnââ¬â¢t exactly been kicking and screaming, but I had kind of freaked out. Iââ¬â¢d been in full possession of all my fears about vampires and magic, and being surrounded in a world completely constructed of that magic had left me frightened and unhinged. And now? Now I had apparently become so comfortable that my biggest concern was that heââ¬â¢d put me in this dress. I gestured to it. ââ¬Å"Can you change me out of this?â⬠ââ¬Å"You can change yourself out of it,â⬠he said. ââ¬Å"Iââ¬â¢m letting go of the control. Just picture yourself the way you are in reality.â⬠I did exactly that, and a moment later, I wore jeans and a pale blue knit top. This obviously disappointed him. ââ¬Å"Thatââ¬â¢s what you sleep in?â⬠ââ¬Å"No.â⬠I laughed. ââ¬Å"I was trying not to sleep at all. It didnââ¬â¢t work. Whyââ¬â¢d you bring me here?â⬠He strolled around and picked up one of the crystal goblets, nodding in approval as though he were some sort of glassmaking expert. ââ¬Å"Exactly that reason. I saw how much that dream bothered you. I figured if I pulled you into one of these, itââ¬â¢d keep you from one of Veronicaââ¬â¢s.â⬠Iââ¬â¢d never thought of that. Vampire magic was certainly preferable to hers. Looking around, I gained a new appreciation for the room. It became a sanctuary, a place where she couldnââ¬â¢t reach me. At least, I hoped not. We really didnââ¬â¢t know how her magic would work against Adrianââ¬â¢s. For all I knew, she might come walking through the door, carrying Sonyaââ¬â¢s bouquet. ââ¬Å"Thank you,â⬠I said. I sat down at one of the tables. ââ¬Å"That was nice of you.â⬠It was another one of those incredible moments when Adrian had had the insight to guess my thoughts ââ¬â or in this case, my fears. ââ¬Å"Well, it was also selfish. I wanted to see you in the dress.â⬠He reconsidered. ââ¬Å"Actually, I wanted to see you in that red Halloween dress again, but I figured that would be pushing my luck.â⬠I looked away as an image of that dress returned to me. Lia DiStefano had created the costume for me. Sheââ¬â¢d loosely based it on an ancient Greek dress and ended up with a gauzy confection of red and gold. That was when Adrian had said I was the most beautiful creature walking the earth. It had happened before he expressed his feelings for me, but even then, his words had undone me. I thought about what he was doing for me now and decided to give him a small compensation. I focused again on my clothes, and the blue dress returned. ââ¬Å"Better?â⬠I asked. His face lit up in a way that made me smile in return. ââ¬Å"Yes.â⬠Hoping I wasnââ¬â¢t setting myself up for some suggestive answer, I asked, ââ¬Å"So what are we going to do?â⬠ââ¬Å"You sure you donââ¬â¢t want to dance? I can make some music.â⬠My silence spoke for me. ââ¬Å"Fine, fine. I donââ¬â¢t know. We could play a game. Monopoly? Life? Battleship? Twister? Whatever we do, I am not playing Scrabble with you.â⬠We warmed up with Battleship ââ¬â I won ââ¬â and then moved on to Monopoly. That took a little work to set up because Adrian could only create things that he could imagine. He couldnââ¬â¢t remember all the streets and cards, so we made our best attempt to re-create them. Neither of us could remember one of the yellow streets, so he named it Jet Way. We proved surprisingly well matched, and I became engrossed in the game. The power shifted back and forth between us. Just when one of us seemed to have all the control, the other would seize it back. I had no doubts about my ability to win ââ¬â until I lost. I sat there, dumbstruck, staring at the board. ââ¬Å"Have you ever lost a game before?â⬠he asked. ââ¬Å"I . . . yes, of course . . . I just didnââ¬â¢t think . . .â⬠ââ¬Å"That I could beat you?â⬠ââ¬Å"No, I just . . . it doesnââ¬â¢t happen very often.â⬠I looked up at him and shook my head. ââ¬Å"Congratulations.â⬠He leaned back in his chair and laughed. ââ¬Å"I think beating you just improved your opinion of me more than anything else Iââ¬â¢ve ever done.â⬠ââ¬Å"Iââ¬â¢ve always had a high opinion of you.â⬠I stretched out, surprised to feel kinks in my body. It was strange how these dreams could have such a realistic physical component. ââ¬Å"How long have we have been here?â⬠ââ¬Å"I donââ¬â¢t know. Itââ¬â¢s not morning yet.â⬠He appeared unconcerned. ââ¬Å"What do you want to play next?â⬠ââ¬Å"We shouldnââ¬â¢t play anything,â⬠I said. I stood up. ââ¬Å"Itââ¬â¢s been hours. Iââ¬â¢m asleep, but you arenââ¬â¢t. You canââ¬â¢t stay up all night.â⬠ââ¬Å"Iââ¬â¢m a vampire, Sage. A creature of the night, remember?â⬠ââ¬Å"One whoââ¬â¢s on a human schedule,â⬠I chastised. He still didnââ¬â¢t seem worried. ââ¬Å"Only one class tomorrow. Iââ¬â¢ll make it up.â⬠ââ¬Å"What about the spirit?â⬠I began to pace restlessly as more of the implications hit me. ââ¬Å"You have to be using a lot of it. Thatââ¬â¢s not good for you.â⬠ââ¬Å"Iââ¬â¢ll take my chances.â⬠There was an unspoken for you at the end of his sentence. I returned to the table and stood in front of his chair. ââ¬Å"You have to be careful. Between this and the Veronica hunt. . . .â⬠I suddenly felt bad. I hadnââ¬â¢t thought twice about asking him to help with that. Iââ¬â¢d forgotten the risks. ââ¬Å"Once weââ¬â¢ve stopped her, you need to lay off the spirit.â⬠ââ¬Å"Donââ¬â¢t worry.â⬠He grinned. ââ¬Å"Once weââ¬â¢ve gotten rid of that bitch, Iââ¬â¢ll be celebrating so much that I wonââ¬â¢t be sober for days.â⬠ââ¬Å"Ugh. Not the healthiest way to do it. Have you ever thought about antidepressants?â⬠I knew they helped some spirit users by blocking the magic. His smile vanished. ââ¬Å"I wonââ¬â¢t touch those things. Lissa took them and hated them. Being cut off from spirit nearly drove her crazy.â⬠I crossed my arms and leaned against the table. ââ¬Å"Yeah, but using it will drive you crazy too.â⬠ââ¬Å"No lectures tonight, Sage. It mars my stunning Monopoly victory.â⬠He was far too casual for such a serious matter, but I knew him well enough to recognize when he wouldnââ¬â¢t yield. ââ¬Å"Fine. Then letââ¬â¢s end on a high note. Send me back, and get some sleep.â⬠ââ¬Å"You sure youââ¬â¢ll be okay?â⬠His concern was so intense. I didnââ¬â¢t think anyone had ever worried about me that much. Well, maybe Ms. Terwilliger. ââ¬Å"Probably she gave up for the night.â⬠I really didnââ¬â¢t know, but I couldnââ¬â¢t let him keep exerting himself. The thought of Veronica reaching out again terrified me . . . but the thought of Adrian endangering himself almost scared me more. Heââ¬â¢d risked so much for me. Could I do any less? ââ¬Å"You can check on me tomorrow night, though.â⬠Adrianââ¬â¢s face lit up as though Iââ¬â¢d just accepted a date. ââ¬Å"Itââ¬â¢s a deal, then.â⬠And like that, the reception hall dissolved around me. I returned to peaceful sleep and just barely heard him say, ââ¬Å"Sweet dreams, Sage.â⬠How to cite The Indigo Spell Chapter Sixteen, Essay examples

The Pygmy Chain Sword Plants Paper Understanding the process of photosynthesis is also vital in other areas, such as medicine, agriculture, energy production, and even electronics. In medicine, since light has extremely high energy content, sometimes it can cause damage to living organisms such as skin cancer and skin aging. To combat the high-energy content, plants developed photoprotective mechanisms to limit the amount of harm, which is caused from exposure to the light. By learning about the causes of tissue damage cause by light exposure and the way photoprotective mechanisms operate, we can develop our understanding of this process and use it to benefit the human race. An example of how photosynthesis has been applied in the medical field is in the treatment of tumors, where substances related to chlorophyll are injected into cancerous tumor tissue and exposed to light. The illumination of these tumors causes photochemical damage to take place, which can kill the tumor and leave surrounding tissue unharmed, as the protective agents converted the excess absorbed light into heat due to the basic principles of photosynthesis. Overall, photosynthesis is relatively inefficient, as only one to two percent of solar energy is used to form photosynthetic products. From that one to two percent, many plants undergo a process called photorespiration that causes them to waste much of the photosynthetic energy absorbed. By studying photosynthesis in detail and understanding processes like photorespiration, we can learn to control these processes so we can increase the productivity and efficiency of plants. (Gust) Research into photosynthesis could lead to the production of more efficient crop strains or the development of more efficient, selective, and environmentally friendly herbicides that take effect by preventing steps of photosynthesis from occurring. Developing our understanding of photosynthesis can help to deal with issues of global importance, the decreasing amounts of fossil fuels and coal, which are vital to our daily life, especially in developing countries such as China where most of the power plants rely on coal. By learning how to control and increase the efficiency of photosynthesis, we can increase the production of fuels derived from agriculture such as ethanol. A new experimental process carried out by scientists today involve making ethanol from trees, grasses, and crop wastes by breaking down the cellulose in woody fibers to form cellulosic ethanol. This is much more efficient as trees and grasses do not need to be replanted every year like grains. (Ethanol made from, 2006) By increasing our understanding of photosynthesis, we can cut down on our dependence on fossil fuels, and on the production of greenhouse gases, by increasing the production of ethanol as an alternate source of fuel. Photosynthesis can even help in the development of technology, as engineers strive to make transistors and circuit components smaller in order to make computers faster and more compact, similar to how thylakoid membranes are packed inside chlorophyll molecules. Learning how plants control the movement of light energy to the different reaction centers and convert the light energy into chemical energy, can allow for the development of molecular-scale computers The reason why I chose this research question is that apart from my own personal interest in plants and my concern over the rising levels of pollution on earth, by understanding photosynthesis, the basis of life on earth, we can make medical and technological discoveries to improve our standards of living. Yet at the same time we can learn to control photosynthesis in order to increase the production of food and ethanol, and limit the amount of carbon dioxide in our atmosphere.
